Nilgiri Tahr





The Nilgiri Tahr is the state animal of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a goat antelope found at the grass covered hills in Nilgiri Hills and southern part of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in South India.

Nilgiri tahr are short with coarse fur. They have curved horns, which are larger in males, can reach upto 40 cm long. Males are dark brown and grown females are greyish in colour.  


 The Total population of the animal is about 1800-2000 individuals only. As per IUCN 3.1 red list nilgiri tahr has been threatened has endangered species. Population trend is has been decreasing in ratio.

The major and principal threat of the animal is habitat loss and poaching. The habitat loss are mainly from domestic livestock and spread of invasive plants. Hunting of ancestors make them decrease in numbers.
Making conservation helps to reduce threaten of  Nilgiri Tahr.
